The Sound

Cathy Rich, daughter of drumming icon Buddy Rich announced last week that the Buddy Rich All Star Band will be traveling to Tokyo on June 24 through the 28th to play 8 shows at the legendary Blue Note club. "This will be the first time since 1978 that my father's band will play in Tokyo" said Rich. "My father loved playing in Japan and going there with an all star band comprised of some of the greatest musicians alive makes it extra special".

Buddy Rich Band touring drummer and Emmy Award winner Gregg Potter will again front the band as he did in England at the 2012 Buddy Rich Memorial Concert at the London Palladium. The band is comprised of Buddy's grandson, Nick Rich, the original drummer of Escape the Fate, Falling in Reverse, and his current band NEFU, as well as Buddy Rich Band alumni trumpet greats Chuck Findley, and Eric Miyashiro, Trombonist Alan Kaplan, and Bass superstar Tony Levin. Cathy Rich will also sing and host the evening.

World-renowned, hard rock /heavy metal drumming superstar Jimmy DeGrasso (Black Star Riders/Alice Cooper/Ozzy Osbourne/Megadeth/Suicidal Tendencies) will host Jimmy DeGrasso’s “Hard Rock & Everything Else” Drum Camp May 3rd – 5th in Oxnard, California at the world famous Drum Channel Studios and the Courtyard Marriot in nearby Camarillo, California. Presented by MUSO Entertainment, Jimmy DeGrasso’s “Hard Rock & Everything Else” Drum Camp will offer a limited number of students a total of 24 hours of hands-on, intensive playing alongside one of rock’s most prolific players.

Jimmy DeGrasso’s “Hard Rock & Everything Else” Drum Camp offers three, eight-hour days of hands-on drumming in a small-scale classroom setting focusing on rock drumming styles, playing with a click track, double bass techniques, rudiments, linear phrases as well as Jazz/Latin styles. ROBERT "RZ" ZILDJIAN (1923-2013)

It is with deep, deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert "RZ" Zildjian, our beloved founder and leader. A tireless and dynamic force within the drum industry, he inspired each one of us in the Sabian family to work harder, to reach farther, to make a difference - and he led us by example.

His professional story is well known. Having been dealt a major career setback at an age where most men would have opted for retirement, RZ instead chose to re-invent the cymbal business with his own hand-crafted brand, a brand that would forever change the face and sound of popular music. With his bare hands he shaped the Sabian cymbal brand into his life's story - and by extension we became his family.

We mourn his passing, and he will be forever in our hearts. But we are better people for having known RZ, and we are richer for having worked alongside him. We draw comfort from the knowledge that his spirit will live on in the music made by drummers the world over.

Rest in peace, RZ.

A discografia de um músico é o retrato fiel de suas experiências, pesquisas, estudos e talvez, para a maioria de nós, o resultado evolutivo desse trabalho. A sucessão de CDs é a busca por esse processo evolutivo, onde a cada novo trabalho o músico procura corrigir a sí mesmo, e então revelar seu momento mais atual. É exatamente essa a minha busca. Em RHYTHMIST empreguei tudo aquilo que buscava experimentar, com o uso de instrumentos que passei a estudar e conhecer, com a inclusão de novos parceiros musicais, mas ao mesmo tempo prevalecendo a minha característica como ritmista. Na faixa título - Rhythmist -, por exemplo, useiapenas uma caixa de fósforos, mesmo porque não é necessário um instrumento musical para que se faça ritmo. Isso tem muito a ver com o Brasil e com a música brasileira, uma vez que o povo brasileiro é certamente o mais musical de todos, independentemente de quais sejam os recursos disponíveis para se fazer música. Estou muito feliz com o resultado do trabalho.



O Rhythmist de Sallaberry

Quatorze faixas, dezenove convidados e o quinto CD solo autoral.
Os números são de Rhythmist, título do novo CD do produtor, compositor e baterista Sallaberry, que mais uma vez amplia suas possibilidades musicais envolvendo parceiros mais que competentes. Rhythmist justifica o título, uma vez que Sallaberry excede os ritmos de sua bateria, utilizando também instrumentos como o africano udu, os tradicionais  tamborim e o berimbau, além de uma caixa de fósforos, que Sallaberry utiliza para gravar a faixa que dá título ao CD. Afinal, ritmista é aquele que cria ritmos, seja na bateria ou simplesmente numa caixa de fósforos.
Ainda degustando Rhythmist faixa a faixa, é nítido o sabor brasileiro em Blue Moon (Maurício Marques/Sallaberry), Sallameira (Alex Lameira/Sallaberry), Frevo Lascado (Luciano Magno/Sallaberry), Praia do Sino (Beto Di Franco/ Tarcísio Édson César/Sallaberry), Sambalada (Fúlvio de Oliveira/Sallaberry), Spirits Of The Forest (Vicente Palma/Sallaberry), De Trio (Michel Leme/Sallaberry) e Soul Rio (Michel Freidenson/Sallaberry). DW Days na America Latina

DW Days na America Latina

Eventos

O DW Days, evento em sua primeira edição na America Latina, trouxe ao Brasil os bateristas Chester Thompson, Marco Minnemann e teve a participação especial do brasileiro Robson Caffé. O previamente anunciado Álvaro López não pôde participar do encontro por problemas em seu visto de entrada no Brasil. O evento comemora os 40 anos da DW, hoje uma das mais aclamadas marcas de bateria do mundo. Clique sobre as fotos para ver os vídeos.

A Drum Workshop foi fundada em 1972 como um estúdio de bateria por Don Lombardi, que dava aulas particulares e eventualmente promovia oficinas (workshops). Don Lombardi e seu então aluno John Good (hoje vice-presidente da marca) começaram a vender pequenas peças de bateria para ajudar nos custos de manutenção do estúdio. Em seguida, a fábrica de ferragens Camco, que então fabricava os pedais de bumbo hoje conhecidos como a série 5000 da DW, ofereceu a Lombardi todo seu maquinário. Assim começava a grande e inovadora indústria na qual a DW se tornou.

O DW Days America Latina foi promovido pela própria DW e pela EM&T (Escola de Música & Tecnologia, representada por Giba Favery e por Mônica Lima), com apoio da Pride Music – Marcelo Juliani - (representante da DW no Brasil) e da rádio Mix FM. O coordenador do curso de bateria da EM&T, Giba Favery, foi o mestre de cerimônia do evento, apresentando os músicos ao teatro lotado.

O brasileiro Robson Caffé, baterista da banda EX4 e endorsee da PDP, marca pertencente ao grupo DW, abriu o workshop com muito entusiasmo, tocando sobre dois temas de sua banda, e terminou com um arranjo feito a partir do Hino Nacional brasileiro.

O americano Chester Thompson foi o segundo a se apresentar e, depois de agradecer ao público (com tradução do baterista Ricardo Mosca), solou por mais de 30 minutos. O baterista, que participou do Genesis e tocou com Phill Collins, Weather Report e Frank Zappa, mostrou toda sua experiência tocando levadas de fusion, jazz, rock, ritmos latinos e samba, com baquetas, mallets e escova e dando grande ênfase na dinâmica. Foi aplaudido de pé.

O alemão Marco Minnemann, baterista, compositor e multi-instrumentista, e também autor do premiado método Extreme Interdependence: Drumming Beyond Independence, começou sua apresentação tocando sobre um tema que havia composto horas antes, e depois mostrou todo seu virtuosismo. Com uma inacreditável independência entre os braços e pernas, Minnemann brincou com a bateria com técnica apuradíssima e abusou dos “ostinatos”, que parece ser a tendência nos atuais estudos de bateria. Terminou sua apresentação tocando sobre um tema de Speed Metal.

Depois dos agradecimentos feitos num simpático português, Marco Minnemann convidou Robson Caffé e Chester Thompson a se juntarem a ele no palco para uma “jam session”. Certamente por sugestão de Chester Thompson, o trio improvisou sobre dois trechos de músicas de Frank Zappa. Começaram com um trecho de “Trouble Every Day”, do álbum Freak Out (1966) e depois improvisaram sobre outro clássico fraseado de “Andy”, do álbum One Size Fits All (1973), no qual Chester Thompson toca bateria.

Entre as apresentações dos bateristas, os organizadores do evento sortearam camisetas e um pedal de bumbo da série 3000, ganho pelo aluno do EM&T Fernando Caetano.

O público que pôde presenciar o evento seguramente aprendeu muito com a apresentação dos três artistas. Esperamos que esse evento se repita nos próximos anos e em outras cidades do Brasil. 

DW Days América Latina

Em comemoração por seu 40º aniversário, a DW anuncia a primeira versão do evento DW Days na América Latina. Trata-se de um festival itinerante que, este ano, contará com apresentações dos bateristas Marco Minnemann, Chester Thompson (Genesis, Phil Collins, Frank Zappa) eÁlvaro López (RE-Q). A turnê tem datas confirmadas na Cidade do México (México, 18/6), Bogotá (Colômbia, 20/6), Quito (Equador, 22/6) e está confirmada a apresentação em São Paulo. Em cada show, grandes performances, e estão programadas sessões de “meet and greet” com os artistas, além de distribuição de prêmios.

O baterista Joey Jordison da banda Slipknot conta que está trabalhando desde a final do tour “All Hope Is Gone” e apresenta seu mais novo grupo musical com os seguintes músicos: Jed Simon (Strapping Young Lad) e Kris Norris (Darkest Hour) com guitarra e baixo, Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails) no teclado e Henry Derek Bonner (Blood Promise, Lilitu) como vocalista.

“Comecei focando muito no pós-punk e industrial, que eu sempre gostei, e acrescentei guitarras super pesadas. Assim começou tudo. Eu demorei muito anos para chegar neste ponto, mas posso dizer honestamente que estou mais satisfeito do que jamais estive em um estúdio”, conta Jordison.

O que todos querem saber é se este novo projeto irá atrasar a produção do novo disco do Slipknot, que fãs esperam há quase três anos.
